This watch was photographed on a 175mm/6.9inch wrist.The Zenith Defy 21 represents a high performance, modern take on the cherished El Primero movement. The crystal has a couple of light scratches. The dial, case, movement, and crown are all signed by Zenith. The lume on the hands has been color corrected to match the dial. The lume on the dial has developed patina and has slightly darkened in a few of the plots. The hour markers and hands have developed patina. The dial has a few scratches, including light ones on the sub-dials. The dial has developed a light patina throughout. The case numbers are clearly visible on the caseback, as is the Zenith logo in relief.
The back of the lugs have some scratches. The case is strong with scratches and some light nicks. This El Primero is in overall great, attractive condition. The dial has aged to a nice creamy color and the tri-color sub-dials have remained vibrant. The example we have today is in overall beautiful condition and has developed a nice patina over the decades. This is your chance to get the original automatic chronograph in a compelling and complete package. Rolex used a modified version of El Primero until the brand released its own in-house automatic chronograph movement in 2000. It's amazing to think about the countless watches to feature this legendary movement inside, including the first self-winding Rolex Daytona, the ref. The red central seconds hand allows for extra legibility and adds a nice pop of color to the watch. If you look closely at the hands in the seconds and minutes register, you'll notice they're a bit longer than the one in the hour register – Zenith did this on purpose.
The sub-dials are engine-turned, adding a layer of depth to the dial. It featured an automatic movement with a quick-set date, a high-frequency escapement, and tri-color registers that gave it a character all its own. A386 was unlike any other chronograph when it was released both aesthetically and mechanically. It was one of the world's first automatic chronograph movements, and the only one at the time with a high-beat frequency of 36,000 vibrations per hour, for improved accuracy. Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the legendary Zenith El Primero movement that was released in 1969. A386 is the most iconic Zenith chronograph and was the first watch to house the automatic El Primero movement.
